| Investment Watch
Investment Watch is a formal fund and fund manager selection and monitoring process that ensures that the investments Manulife offers are among the best in the industry. Investment Watch begins with a team of investment professionals whose sole responsibility is picking the right funds and fund managers and ensuring their ongoing quality.
Because the Investment Watch process is applied to Manulife's funds and fund managers, you can feel confident that you are choosing funds from top-quality fund managers. And because you can choose from a variety of fund classes and fund styles, you can follow the best advice in the industry: diversify, diversify, diversify.
How We Select Fund Managers
Here are some of the things we look for to identify the best fund managers: - A disciplined investment process that has been consistent over time. This means if you choose a fund manager because the manager has a value investing style, that manager will maintain a value investing style.
- A team of investment professionals with depth, expertise and continuity over time. You get the best working for you.
- A history of good performance without taking unnecessary risks. Even though no one can predict future investment returns, a history of strong performance is an indicator of the manager's expertise.
- A meaningful code of ethics that is central to the culture of the organization.
- A compensation and ownership structure that rewards the manager for acting in the long-term interests of the investor – YOU!
All these factors ensure that Manulife selects only fund managers who meet our high standards for quality.
How We Monitor Fund Managers
Many factors affect manager performance. Our monitoring process looks at a broad range of significant quantitative and equally important qualitative measures. Our fund manager review process consists of day-to-day, monthly and quarterly monitoring of market events and fund performance. Then we add formal annual reviews that include:
- A review of absolute performance, risk-adjusted performance, and consistency of performance when compared to a peer group and benchmark.
- A review of the investment policies and procedures of the fund to ensure that fund objectives, risk tolerances, and investment constraints are being met.
- An interview with the fund manager to evaluate qualitative factors such as manager turnover and consistency of style.
